Tamping Rammers

A tamping rammer, also called a jumping jack compactor or upright rammer, delivers high impact force through a small footprint, making it the right tool for compacting cohesive soils in confined spaces. Trenches, pipe and cable backfill, footings, around structures and hard to reach edges where a plate compactor can’t reach or won’t achieve density.

Rammers and plate compactors do different jobs, and using the wrong one is the most common cause of failed compaction testing.

Choose a tamping rammer for clay, silt and other cohesive soils; trenches and narrow excavations; backfill around pipes, conduit and footings; deep lifts where impact energy needs to travel down through the layer.

Choose a forward or reversible plate compactor for sand, gravel and granular fill; asphalt and paver bedding; large open areas where coverage rate matters more than impact force.

If you’re compacting mixed material or working across both, most crews run a rammer for the trench and a plate for the open ground.

Rammers work in the dirt and they need looking after. Taman carries wear parts and consumables; shoes, filters, bellows, springs and clutches, and our workshop services every machine we sell.
